Prof. Piotr Trzonkowski, immunologist and transplantologist. Among his many scientific achievements, a particularly noteworthy one is the development and application to patients of cell therapy that weakens the immune system. He used regulatory T lymphocytes (TREG lymphocytes) to fight against incurable autoimmune diseases, including type I diabetes, Hashimoto’s disease and multiple sclerosis. For his research on TREG and its pioneering application in cell therapy for human diseases, he received the „Polish Nobel prize”, i.e. the Prize of the Foundation for Polish Science in the area of Life and Earth Sciences in 2017. Apart from his professional passions, he is interested in the history of the 20th century.
